2nd E+FR Award

Unicer and Microsoft were the winning companies in the second Most Family-Friendly Company Award, organised by AESE and Deloitte.

At the ceremony on 20 April, the Jury also awarded Honourable Mention, as it did the previous year, to Huf Portuguesa – Fábrica de Componentes para o Automóvel, for being an industrial company, in a troubled sector, geographically removed from the large urban centres (Tondela) and distinguished from the other competing companies by the best practice it has adopted.

Dr. Raul Diniz, President of AESE, welcomed the audience of about 150 guests, stressing that “family policies are the social policies of the 21st century”. Inasmuch as “work and love are the two main strands of human happiness, including everything derived from them”, family must be treated as “a basic good”, but also as an “institution of public interest”.

Since the first edition of the E+FR Award in 2005, Best Practice in the balance between work and family have been changing in Portugal. Dr Rosa Freitas Soares, of Deloitte, believes that the new staging of this Award is evidence that companies are becoming increasingly conscious of and committed to this balance.

Based on methodology developed by Professor Nuria Chinchilla and Prof. Steven Poelmans, of IESE, Fátima Carioca presented the results obtained from the 62 participating companies. Compared to 2005, more companies responded to the survey, and 29 of the re-entering companies showed progress in the implementation of family-friendly policies.

Among the measures that benefit the quality of life of employees, the flexibility of hours is the most common. Also noted were the types of leave granted by each company, supervision services for children and the elderly, housekeeping services and the possibility of working remotely, among other measures, depending on the creativity of the organisations and the employees themselves.

After the lively talk on work-life balance by the journalist Dr Isabel Stilweel, Laurinda Alves and Margarida Mercês de Melo announced the names of the winners for the Most Family-Friendly Companies Award. João Paulo Girbal, Managing Director of Microsoft Portugal, accepted the Award in the category of Small Companies. Unicer, represented by its President, Manuel Ferreira de Oliveira, was recognised in the category of Large Companies. And Dr Paloma Cabañas, Director of Human Resources at HUF Portuguesa, received the Honourable Mention from the Jury.
