AESE is the premier Business School in Portugal, founded in 1980 as an initiative of the Association of Higher Education in Business.

In terms of academics, AESE was modelled on the IESE Business School – the post-graduate management school of the Universidad de Navarra.AESE uses the Case Method, considered by Harvard Business School to be the methodology of excellence in Executive Training. The Case Method is a pragmatic process for the enhancement of ability by making decisions about real cases.

AESE was launched in 1980 with the PADE – Advanced Business Management Programme. In 1988, the PDE – Business Management Programme began in Porto and Lisbon.

The main building, constructed specifically for learning under the Case Method, opened in Lisbon in the year 2000. The following year saw the launch of the Executive MBA AESE/IESE, a programme compatible with working life and offering a joint AESE/IESE degree.

The faculty, consisting of academics and business leaders, provides executives choosing AESE for their future partner with management tools and techniques, as well as a value set focusing on ethics and humanism, enabling continuous personal and professional development.

In 2006, the President of the Portuguese Republic, Dr Jorge Sampaio, awarded the Order of Merit to AESE for distinguished acts and services for the benefit of society.

In 2007, AESE was the first Business School in Portugal to join forces with Global Compact, a United Nations initiative with the objective of promoting respect for the 10 Universal Principles in the areas of Human Rights, Labour, the Environment and Anti-Corruption.

Since 2008, the Executive MBA AESE/IESE Programme has been accredited by the EPAS -  European Programme Accreditation System, of the EFMD - European Foundation for Management Development.

AESE is certified by DGERT – General Directorate for Employment and Labour Relations.

The year 2010 was marked by the founding of the ASM – Angola School of Management, a project for which AESE is a contributor in terms of teaching and academics.
