Since then, the country has effectively leveraged the inflow of EU structural funds to grow and strengthen its economy. Combined with sound monetary policy, this context led to the continuous appreciation of the Polish zloty (PLN) against major currencies, a performance expected to continue in the foreseeable future. However, with the worsening of the financial crisis in the summer of 2008, triggered by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, three Eastern European countries turned to the International Monetary Fund (IMF)—Hungary, Ukraine, and Latvia—leading investors to abandon the region and, consequently, its currencies. Naturally, this movement resulted in a sharp depreciation of the zloty, which significantly affected Bank Millennium’s performance, given its dependence on the robustness of the Polish economy and its currency. This situation ultimately caused a structural shift in the sector’s paradigm and weakened the bank’s strategy.

The crisis began in February 2007, in the United States, when HSBC recorded significant impairments on its assets linked to mortgage-backed securities associated with the subprime segment. It was then that the world became aware of a major problem that had been developing in the shadows and would ultimately expose the fragilities of the financial system. Several other financial institutions followed, markets panicked, and investors became progressively more risk-averse, reducing their exposure to equities and seeking refuge in Treasury bonds and commodities. This movement led speculators to join the “herd effect,” withdrawing billions of dollars from equity and mortgage-backed securities markets, further pressuring the declining markets. Gradually, distrust among banks began to intensify, as there was little information about the actual extent of losses faced by each institution, and the interbank liquidity market began to weaken and freeze.

A new era for Poland began in 2004, with accession to the European Union.
