Rear Admiral António Gameiro Marques joined the Naval Academy in 1976 and completed a degree in Naval Military Sciences in 1981 and concluded in 1987 the Master of Science Program in Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, USA.
After attending the NATO Defense College in Rome, between 2004 and 2007 he served as Military Advisor to the Portuguese Ambassador to NATO. Promoted to Rear Admiral in November 2008, as Flag Officer he was CIO of the PT Navy (2010 to 2013), Deputy Secretary General of MOD Portugal (2013 to 2016). From the 1st of September 2016 to the 31st of May 2025, he was the General Director of the National Security Authority, which includes de National Cybersecurity Centre in its structure.
During the academic year 2013/2014, he concluded the Executive Leadership Program of the AESE/IESE Business School and in October/November 2023 the 10th Non-Executive Management Program of the Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance. In 2022 he won the IDC’s Best Digital Leader Award in Portugal.
He currently teaches senior management programmes on topics ranging from leadership to the digital maturity of organisations, including cybersecurity, in particular the role that digital literacy plays in preserving democracy in today’s societies.
