Visiting Professor
She is Professor of Health Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Lecturer at AESE Business School.
She is a Fellow at the Department of Health Policy. She teaches courses in health economics, with a focus on policy applications of fundamental economic concepts, on the Department’s full-time master’s programme and executive education.
She acts as an adviser to national and international organisations, including the Portuguese Ministry of Health and the European Observatory on Health Systems and Policy. She co-authored the Health Systems in Transition – Portugal 2011 country profile and the Strategy for to Eliminate Hepatitis C in Portugal, in 2017. Dr Machado is committed to building bridges between researchers, policy-makers, and health care practitioners. She is the Deputy Chair of the Early Career Committee of the European Health Economics Association and a member of the Management Board of BEHnet, an international network of researchers and practitioners conducting behavioural experiments in health.
She specialises in blood donations and organ transplantation. Her research investigates the behaviour of blood and organs supply and demand, namely in response to exogenous shocks and policy changes. Her focus is on the role of social preferences in delivering health care to patients with severe organ failure, undergoing cancer treatments, or life-threatening medical emergencies. She is currently studying the effects of contingent rewards for blood donations, the determinants of blood donor retention, and how health care payment systems affect heart transplant decisions. She is also studying the effects of the opioid and firearm epidemic in heart and kidney transplants.
