Design and operationalization of an industrial monitoring platform

INCM is a brand that represents solidity and security. If we add innovation, it is the right brand to unite the digital and physical worlds.” Gonçalo Caseiro, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda

On May 23, 2019, the steering committee for the Shoplogix Project took place, with the participation of the Board of Directors, the Information Systems Department, the Graphic and Currency Units, the Maintenance and Engineering Department, and Shoplogix. The meeting was held at the premises of Imprensa Nacional – Casa da Moeda, S.A. (INCM) in Lisbon, and one of the agenda items was the discussion of the pilot results and the definition of the strategy for rolling out the solution to the remaining industrial equipment.

As Tiago Catarino, Portfolio and Project Manager at INCM, headed to the meeting room, he thought about the recent comments from the team that monitored the Pilot: “If we roll out the solution across all equipment simultaneously and encounter startup problems, we risk the solution not being accepted by users, with an irreversible impact on the project’s success…”; “A phased strategy will require extending the project timeline, which could compromise the target set with the Board of Directors for integrating the selected industrial equipment into the technological solution…”

The steering meeting in question was decisive for the future of the project, but above all, for the set of projects included in the Industry 4.0 Portfolio, which could begin depending on the success of this project. It was necessary to carefully evaluate all scenarios and their respective procedural and technological impacts, both immediate and long-term. At stake was the rollout of an industrial monitoring solution across all the organization’s critical industrial equipment, which left many apprehensive about the risk of non-adoption by users, as well as the possible gains this solution could bring to the company.
