Nuno Fernandes is Full Professor of Finance at IESE Business School. He is also Chairman of the Audit Committee of the European Investment Bank, Managing Partner at Odgers Berndtson Board Solutions—where he focuses on supporting boards of directors in establishing and maintaining sound corporate governance—and Associate Researcher at the European Corporate Governance Institute. His areas of interest include corporate finance, climate finance, mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance, banking, and financial strategies. Between 2018 and 2023, he served as Chairman of the Audit Board of Banco de Portugal.
Before joining IESE, he was Dean of Católica Lisbon. Additionally, he taught Finance for a decade at IMD (Lausanne, Switzerland), where he directed the Strategic Finance program, among other programs designed for major international corporations. He was also a member of the World Economic Forum advisory committee.
He holds a PhD in Business Administration (Finance) from IESE Business School and a degree in Economics from Universidade Católica Portuguesa.
He has been honored with several teaching and research awards as a specialist in valuation, international financial markets, and emerging market risks. His work has been published in leading international academic journals, such as the Journal of Financial Economics, the Review of Financial Studies, the Journal of International Business Studies, the Journal of Financial Intermediation, the Journal of Applied Corporate Finance, the Journal of Portfolio Management, and the Harvard Business Review. He is a regular speaker at business conferences worldwide and a frequent contributor to international media outlets such as the Financial Times and the Wall Street Journal.
He is also the author of several books and book chapters, including: Finance for Executives: A Practical Guide for Managers (2nd edition), The Value Killers: How Mergers and Acquisitions Cost Companies Millions—And How to Prevent Them, and his most recent work, Climate Finance.
His work has been recognized with several awards, including a fellowship granted by the FDIC (U.S. federal financial regulatory agency). In 2008, he was awarded the Lamfalussy Fellowship, a prize granted by the European Central Bank to the world’s leading researchers in finance. In 2015, he received the “Best Paper of the Year” award from the Journal of Financial Intermediation. In 2022, he won the “Outstanding Teacher” award in the global competition organized by The Case Centre, often referred to as “the Oscars of business education.”
Throughout his career, Professor Nuno Fernandes has provided consulting services to boards of directors and management teams of companies and financial institutions in Asia, Europe, Latin America, and the Middle East, in the areas of corporate governance, financial strategy, mergers and acquisitions, and sustainability.
