“A global recession now seems inevitable,” according to the report Economic Effects of Coronavirus Outbreak (COVID-19) on the World Economy by professor Nuno Fernandes.
The report estimates that gross domestic product (GDP) will take a hit ranging from 3% to 5%, depending on the country, in a mild scenario in which the shutdown lasts for 1.5 months. Every extra month of shutdown accounts for approximately 2-2.5% of global GDP.
Fernandes notes that how deep and long the downturn will be depends on many factors, in addition to the length of current lockdowns. Those include the success of measures to prevent the spread of COVID-19, along with the effects of government policies to alleviate liquidity problems in SMEs, to support families under financial distress, and to secure jobs.
“There is still time for global policymakers to have a coordinated policy response to the virus and its economic impacts,” Fernandes writes. “However, time is running out.”
The severity of the recession will also depend on how companies react and how quickly supply chains can be restored, the report says.
Historical comparisons difficult
In making its GDP forecasts, the report shows why simple historical comparisons with crises such as SARs or the 2008/9 financial meltdown are not applicable.
Unlike with previous crises, Fernandes points out that “this time, we are facing a combined supply and demand shock” exacerbated by a variety of factors, such as the highly integrated nature of the world economy and the key role that China, the center of the initial outbreak, now plays in it.
The global pandemic has also come at a time when interest rates are extremely low, and monetary tools to combat the crisis are limited. “Central banks exhausted their firepower during the good times. There is almost no room for monetary stimulus to help sustain the coming risks,” he warns.
Taking into account this context, the report discusses how the economic impact of the coronavirus outbreak is being felt across different industries and countries. It finds that the economic costs of the crisis will hit some much harder than others. For example:
· Service-oriented economies will be particularly negatively affected, and have more jobs at risk
· Countries like Greece, Portugal, and Spain that are more reliant on tourism (more than 15% of GDP) will be more affected by this crisis
· Countries more reliant on exports will suffer disproportionally
GDP estimates based on three scenarios
The report also attempts a rough estimate of the potential global economic costs of COVID-19 under three different scenarios: a shutdown of 1.5 months (from mid-March to end of April), of 3 months (lasting until mid-June), and of 4.5 months (until end of July.)
In a mild scenario (a shutdown of economic activity is assumed to last 1.5 months, from mid-March to end of April):
· Overall, for all countries analyzed, an average impact of -3.5% of GDP is expected.
· The U.S. is expected to enter into a recession, with a downturn in GDP of 0.8%. Overall, the crisis is expected to cost it nearly 3% of its GDP.
· Most European countries will face significant recessions, seeing contractions of their GDP of 2% to 3%. Judging from prior recessions, a decline in GDP of this magnitude will significantly increase unemployment.
· In this scenario, nearly all countries analyzed will experience negative GDP growth, apart from China (although its growth will still be slashed from a pre-crisis estimate of 6%, to below 3%).
If crisis measures are extended:
· On average, each additional month of shutdowns will cost 2%-2.5% of global GDP.
· If extreme COVID-19-related measures last until mid-June 2020, the U.S. will see its GDP fall almost 4%. Italy and Germany will see their GDP fall close to 6%, and the UK more than 5%.
· If it lasts until the end of July 2020, the average decline in GDP would be close to 8%. And the decrease in GDP could, in some cases, be higher than 10%.
According to Fernandes, “If the ongoing crisis lasts until the end of the summer, the global economy faces the gravest threat seen in the last two centuries.”

Os mercados de capitais já sinalizaram a catástrofe económica que se avizinha e os agentes económicos aguardam expectantes pela anunciada recessão mundial. Neste cenário, a incerteza com que os empresários e dirigentes são confrontados é muito elevada. Todavia, a melhor forma de lidar com este contexto desafiante reside no conhecimento e na informação.
A prestigiada revista de gestão Harvard Business Review acaba de publicar um interessante e pertinente artigo intitulado “What Coronavirus Could Mean for the Global Economy”. Com base na análise de pandemias anteriores, os seus autores exploram diferentes cenários de recessão económica e sugerem um conjunto de acções que se podem tomar já no curto-prazo.

Subitamente, e sem que ninguém fosse capaz de prever, o nosso mundo desabou. A nossa segurança foi posta em causa, a economia entrou numa crise profunda, e o futuro tornou-se incerto. [/av_textblock] [av_toggle_container initial='0' mode='accordion' sort='' styling='' colors='custom' font_color='#f37421' background_color='#dcded9' border_color=''] [av_toggle title='Os riscos da outra pandemia: a eclosão de doenças psiquiátricas' tags=''] Vários governos tomaram decisões políticas de saúde publica urgentes. De modo a preservar a nossa saúde física e evitar a propagação da doença, foi decretado o isolamento social. Por conseguinte, quanto mais tempo estivermos nessa condição, menor será a probabilidade de o vírus contaminar a população. Por outro lado, quanto mais tempo estivermos isolados maiores serão os riscos de sofrermos de doença psiquiátrica. Vale a pena por isso fazer uma breve reflexão.
O convívio social é uma necessidade humana, e o isolamento compulsivo acaba por se tornar perturbador para o nosso equilíbrio mental. Com o passar do tempo, há sérios riscos de surgir um fenómeno desadaptativo com várias manifestações psicopatológicas, tais como: ansiedade, ataques de pânico, alterações do humor, comportamentos agressivos, insónia, pensamentos suicidas, etc.
Afinal, durante quanto tempo é possível manter milhões de pessoas privadas de contacto social sem lhes causar danos mentais? Não sabemos. Haverá alguns que suportarão melhor, enquanto outros irão sofrer consequências, através do aparecimento de doenças psiquiátricas. Obviamente que as novas tecnologias de comunicação podem mitigar o isolamento e devem ser utilizadas para minimizar os efeitos nefastos do isolamento social compulsivo, mas nalguns casos não será suficiente.
O confinamento prolongado de pessoas no seu domicílio, ainda que sejam familiares, devido ao stress e à tensão psicológica, pode aumentar o número de conflitos interpessoais, crises conjugais e, em determinados casos, o risco de violência doméstica.
A saúde mental das nossas crianças, adolescentes e jovens também pode ser afetada. Isto terá reflexos negativos na vida escolar, podendo ocorrer uma quebra nas capacidades de aprendizagem e no rendimento académico. Desenganem-se aqueles que, após o regresso dos alunos à escola, julgam que tudo vai ficar exatamente igual como estava anteriormente, pois irão surgir dificuldades que terão de ser avaliadas caso a caso.
Uma parte da mão de obra do sector produtivo, após o regresso à atividade laboral, poderá ficar atingida e condicionada. Algumas pessoas serão assoladas por sentimentos de insegurança, falta de esperança no futuro, e dificuldades cognitivas decorrentes da perda de saúde mental que levarão a uma quebra de rendimento no trabalho. Tudo se pode complicar ainda mais se houver um aumento significativo de patologias psiquiátricas na população, já que também haverá um aumento do absentismo laboral devido a este tipo de doenças. É preciso não esquecer que, na maioria dos casos, a recuperação das doenças psiquiátricas (por exemplo, das perturbações depressivas) é demorada, podendo levar vários meses.
Mas não é apenas o isolamento o único fator de risco para o aparecimento de doenças psiquiátricas. Existem ainda dois grupos que estão em particular risco. O primeiro grupo é heterogéneo, sendo constituído pelos vários profissionais de saúde que estão a trabalhar incansavelmente nos hospitais e centros de saúde (médicos, enfermeiros, técnicos, farmacêuticos, administrativos, etc.), bem como todos os outros profissionais que garantem uma série de serviços essenciais à população. Refiro-me aos governantes diretamente envolvidos na gestão da crise, às forças de segurança, aos trabalhadores dos supermercados e da área da distribuição, aos jornalistas, etc. Os riscos de burnout são evidentes.
O segundo grupo corresponde à população prisional, pois há riscos de segurança que devem ser considerados. As visitas de familiares são essenciais para o equilíbrio emocional dos reclusos. Pode-se privar as visitas durante algum tempo, mas se houver um prolongamento excessivo dessa limitação vai ocorrer um incremento da tensão psicológica nas cadeias, aumentando o risco de violência e de distúrbios que podem ser difíceis de controlar pelas autoridades. Neste segundo grupo também se incluem os idosos que permanecem nos lares ou nas suas residências, bem como os doentes internados nos hospitais que ficam deste modo isolados, sem visitas dos familiares; portanto, em maior risco de sofrerem de depressão.
Ninguém sabe qual será o impacto em termos psiquiátricos deste isolamento social forçado de milhões de pessoas em todo o mundo, mas terá certamente consequências negativas na saúde psíquica em todos os escalões etários.
Por este motivo, o confinamento social não pode durar demasiado tempo. Logo que seja possível, as medidas de isolamento social devem ser levantadas de forma prudente, responsável e progressiva. Como psiquiatra, sinto-me obrigado a fazer este apelo ponderado, pois também é preciso proteger a saúde mental da população, evitando-se criar uma outra pandemia: a eclosão de doenças psiquiátricas na sociedade. E, no meio das suas elucubrações, teve uma intuição surpreendente que garantiu a presença do seu nome no livro de ouro da humanidade: quem está melhor preparado são aqueles que têm um amor (alguém), ou um projeto (algo) que o projeta para fora da lógica do eu egoísta, e lhe permite transcender-se.
Do que realmente precisamos é de uma mudança radical da nossa atitude perante a vida; o importante, na verdade, não é o que podemos recolher, mas o que podemos dar.
Qual é o propósito da minha vida? A quem sirvo? Para que sirvo? A quem me dou?
A minha meta não deverá ser a auto-realização como tal (Maslow); a realização pessoal é o efeito secundário do trabalho e do amor; a vida tem sentido, não como satisfação, mas como tarefa. “A porta da felicidade abre-se para fora” (Kierkgaard).
Ou parafraseando o Papa Francisco: sair de si mesmo para se unir aos outros faz bem. Fechar-se em si mesmo é provar o veneno amargo da imanência. A humanidade perderá com cada opção egoísta que fizermos (Evangelii gaudium, 87 [2014]).

Along with the rest of the world, marketing teams continue to cover new ground and confront unprecedented challenges triggered by the coronavirus pandemic.
I recently asked Kathy Bachmann, GM of Americas with the consultancy Analytic Partners Inc., to share her perspective on some of the strategic issues marketers suddenly find themselves addressing.
Paul Talbot: There is an assumption, and in some cases for some products, a reality borne out by data, that online sales are spiking while offline sales are sagging. How should we put this scenario in proper perspective? 
Kathy Bachmann: A clear shift to e-commerce has impacts across the organization, from supply chain to resourcing to marketing. The health crisis seems to be driving larger basket sizes for offline retailers as households stock up and would further push the trend that many of our clients are already seeing with consumers switching to online purchases.  
Talbot: Marketing mix modeling… is it reasonable to expect that some current mixes will be under review and potentially significant changes made? 
Bachmann: We’ve already been working with clients on modeling scenarios for marketing investments considering the spread of Coronavirus through our LIVE Model framework that allows for ‘real-time’ insights as data is made available.  
The Coronavirus is impacting consumer mobility, shifts in media consumption habits, supply chains, such as shortages of and concerns over goods manufactured in China and economic volatility.  
With this dynamic situation, companies need to plan their next marketing moves wisely to either mitigate downside risk or capture all the upside that’s possible. 
Some advertisers should hold dry powder while others should double-down on marketing investments to seize opportunities. It's crucial for organizations to pay attention to how this situation is altering the landscape and plan scenarios accordingly, rather than wait and hope that no changes are necessary.  
Here are some examples of the types of shifts we’re seeing and expect to see in marketing approaches and investments: 
- Directing investments toward marketing tactics that drive online sales. 
- Reducing marketing investments on campaigns to drive short-term sales or business outcomes, while keeping brand-building campaigns live – essentially saving dry powder.
- Shifting budgets to promoting at-home and delivery-based options (i.e., at-home fitness solutions/equipment/apps, grocery delivery, restaurant delivery, etc.)
- Shifting focus from promoting premium products to entry-point or everyday items.
- With sporting events being cancelled or played without fans, many advertisers are formulating new plans for those budgets – often holding the investments for later use – or scenario planning for how to redeploy their dollars if a large advertising event such as the Olympics is cancelled or postponed.
- Fine-tuning media allocations by tactic as we experience demand-driven price fluctuations in various media channels. Changes in media supply and demand will impact costs, so we anticipate marketers will need to closely manage certain spending areas, such as digital, with refreshed ROIs on new cost levels.
- Tracking data in local geographies that experienced varying levels of impacts.
- Using trends social sentiment and google query volume on relevant key words as indicators to inform marketing actions.
- Building in quick response learnings to optimize marketing budgets and transfer learnings across markets.
- Measurement of custom creative addressing the viruses.
Talbot: The disciplined marketer who is determined not to overreact, but recognizes the need to make adjustments to respond to shifts in consumer behavior driven by the coronavirus outbreak… what questions should this marketer be asking and what data should be considered? 
Bachmann: In a crisis, it is necessary to ask: What advertising messaging is appropriate and how do you most effectively engage with customers during the outbreak? How can you leverage analytics to understand and meet their needs?
Data surrounding consumer behavior, spending trends and channel effectiveness should all be considered, as well as crisis-specific information.
Talbot: How should the strategic marketer make the distinction between a short-term sales spike and a longer-term sales trend?
Bachmann: While organizations are working to adjust their output against short-term consumer demand, many marketers are working to adjust their plans for longer-term projections.  
Some expect that consumers may not return exactly to their prior habits when the outbreak has passed. When faced with disruption and uncertainty, we recommend leveraging advanced analytics to support decisioning and reduce risk that can be run against a number of possible scenarios.
We leverage our decisioning tools and through scenario planning and optimization, so our clients can weigh short and long-term implications and better meet their customers’ needs, given a range of outcomes.

[/av_textblock] [av_toggle_container initial='0' mode='accordion' sort='' styling='' colors='custom' font_color='#f37421' background_color='#dcded9' border_color=''] [av_toggle title='O mundo em shut-down ...' tags=''] Nos próximos tempos, o mundo estará em aparente shut-down: a maioria das empresas abranda a sua atividade ou é obrigada a parar, os espaços públicos das cidades ficam desertos, os países isolam-se e as pessoas recolhem a casa. Na realidade, o único fenómeno que todos gostaríamos de “desligar” era a própria pandemia. Tudo o resto é muito importante que se mantenha vivo. Estar isolado ajuda a conter a disseminação do vírus. Estar parado agrava as consequências sociais e económicas do mesmo. Penso em concreto, nas empresas e nas famílias por serem as duas comunidades de pessoas estruturantes da sociedade.
Neste período sem precedentes e de enorme incerteza, o papel dos líderes empresariais é determinante. No ecossistema da empresa, cuidar atentamente as pessoas, o negócio e a sua operação bem como a sustentabilidade financeira são as grandes prioridades. São prioridades de sempre, é verdade, mas que em tempos mais complexos convém que sejam mesmo prioritárias.
Em relação às pessoas é o momento de ser muito humano, traçar orientações, preocupar-se com os receios e dificuldades com que se encontram. E não apenas profissional e economicamente, mas social e pessoalmente. Não apenas os colaboradores, mas também os clientes, os fornecedores, todos com os quais contamos para levar a empresa para a frente, incluindo a família de cada um. E partilhar também as suas próprias preocupações. As fragilidades partilhadas geram confiança, a confiança gera fortaleza, resiliência e compromisso, os quais geram otimismo e suscitam a inovação, abrindo caminho para chegar ao futuro.
Entretanto mau será se se considerar que o momento é de “business as usual” ou se paralisar com medo de arriscar fazer diferente. Na maioria dos negócios é preciso manter vivo o negócio tradicional, mesmo que a um ritmo menos acelerado, mas ao mesmo tempo, reinventá-lo face às circunstâncias atuais. E o mesmo em relação a pensar como se podem melhorar as operações. As novas formas de trabalho e o atuar de forma contrária à lógica da economia global nas cadeias de abastecimento criam aprendizagens que têm de nos levar para paradigmas de funcionamento diferentes, mais eficientes.
Crítico será manter recursos financeiros que permitam fazer esta travessia. E aí não existem muitas soluções: fazer diferente, envolver outros na solução (colaboradores, clientes, parceiros, bancos, estado,…) e tomar medidas no tempo oportuno, sempre considerando as consequências humanas e éticas das mesmas.
Em relação às famílias, de acordo com a duração da pandemia, agravar-se-ão as dificuldades económicas e sociais. Mas, desde logo, pensando na organização equilibrada entre a convivência familiar e o trabalhar em casa, já de si potenciadora de conflitos que podem ser marcantes na rede de relações e afetos em família. A forma como cada família vai ultrapassar este período, depende muito de vários ingredientes como sejam a paciência (muita paciência), mas também o respeito do espaço e tempo de cada um, a delicadeza no convívio, a generosidade nas tarefas comuns e o empenho por desfrutar do bom que é ter esta possibilidade inopinada e tantas vezes sonhada de estarmos a passar mais tempo juntos.
Este tempo exige sair fora da habitual zona de conforto e isso significa ficar mais vulnerável. Partilhar os desafios e as soluções é construir a história da empresa ou da família. Em ambos os casos, daqui a uns meses, quando olharmos para trás, será algo que nos deixará felizes de o ter feito e, principalmente, nos levará a entender que se não o tivéssemos feito não chegaríamos fortes e preparados para os próximos tempos.

Apesar de considerar que este surto pode estar ativo por mais 2 ou 3 meses, refere que os efeitos serão de médio prazo e podem alterar a forma das empresas funcionarem.
No curto prazo, mais do que a preocupação económica da conta de resultados – que já está muito comprometida com este contexto – é muito importante a liquidez e a cobrança cuidadosa das dívidas. A atenção aos colaboradores – mesmo com reduções de trabalho e respetivas remunerações – assim como a atenção aos clientes é de importância capital; outro aspeto a ter em conta é a gestão dos processos.
