It has lifted billions of people out of poverty, but economic power has concentrated and too many people are being left behind while the planet is paying a price. Public trust in government and business has plummeted as inequality has risen. Some question whether capitalism is the solution.
Capitalism can and must do better to ensure its economic benefits are more fairly and broadly available to everyone, without overburdening the planet.
Inclusive Capitalism is fundamentally about creating long-term value that benefits all stakeholders – businesses, investors, employees, customers, governments, communities, members of society, and the planet.
A capitalism that is inclusive:

Produces equitable and sustainable growth that empowers others and that addresses society’s needs.
Empowers everyone to partake in the economic system in a responsible way and to be fairly rewarded for their effort.
Means that every individual is able to reach for and realize opportunity irrespective of criteria such as socio-economic background, gender, ethnicity, religion, or age.
Ensures that one generation does not realize near-term gains at the cost of future generations, nor one actor unfairly garnering benefits at the expense of others.

The Council for Inclusive Capitalism is a CEO-led movement of businesses pursuing profit in ways that lead to a more inclusive and sustainable economy. Meredith Sumpter is the CEO of the Council for Inclusive Capitalism, where she leads the work of the Council along with Steward members. She also is CEO of the separate Coalition for Inclusive Capitalism, a global non-profit that engages stakeholders across the private, public, and civic sectors to drive reform initiatives that make capitalism inclusive and its benefits more widely and equitably shared.

Formerly, Meredith was Head of Research & Strategy at Eurasia Group, a global political risk advisory firm. In that role, she oversaw the firm’s research platform and provided analysis on global politics and 21^st century drivers of trade, disruption, and growth. Her nearly 20-year experience in public policy, analysis, and business spans multiple regions and sectors, including ICT, media, consumer goods, healthcare, banking and finance, and commodities. She previously also led strategic advisory for Fortune 500 firms across East, Southeast and South Asia, worked in the US Senate, and served as a US diplomat in Beijing, where she advised two US ambassadors and analyzed politics, economics, and security issues for the policy community.

Meredith is at heart a public servant dedicated to expanding opportunity. She holds an advisory position at the “think and do tank” New America along with the Harvard Edmund J. Safra Center for Ethics, where she convenes local leaders with national research experts on innovative policy reforms to renew the social contract as part of the Justice, Health & Democracy Rapid Response Impact Initiative. Meredith has appeared on major networks including CNBC, Bloomberg, MSNBC, BBC, and CNN. She enjoys engaging public audiences and presenting at industry and global conferences. Meredith was raised in rural Alaska and has a rich life parenting four children with her husband Ryan.

Ao contrário de crises anteriores a ação concertada dos Bancos Centrais e Governos tornou possível salvaguardar a estabilidade financeira e lançar os alicerces de uma recuperação célere que prevê repor o nível do PIB pré-pandemia já em 2022. Há, contudo, um risco novo no horizonte – A inflação.
A sucessão de um crescimento acelerado na esteira de um confinamento forçado colocou as cadeias logísticas globais sob pressão e está a criar uma disrupção na oferta que por sua vez fez aumentar a inflação.
A resposta para combater a pressão inflacionista não é evidente numa altura em precisamos de continuidade na política monetária atual para apoiar a recuperação em curso ainda em pleno convívio com a pandemia. Esta sessão pretende promover a discussão sobre os desafios atuais e pretende apontar caminhos para consolidar o crescimento e a geração de emprego. Nas empresas lucrativas abraça-se o mote do exercício da Responsabilidade Social Corporativa. Onde se cruzam os desafios destes dois setores da economia? De que forma podemos colocar frente a frente os setor de Economia Social e o setor lucrativo, numa perspetiva win-win, em prol do tão falado bem comum?
Criadas sem fins lucrativos, com o intuito de produzir serviços que respondam a necessidades reais, as organizações que integram o setor de Economia Social, têm a particularidade de, baseadas na parceria entre pessoas com interesses comuns e recorrendo a intervenções de tipo participativo, priorizar as contribuições pessoais e profissionais, sejam voluntárias ou remuneradas, sobre o capital. A sustentabilidade das instituições deste setor é um tema de agenda em todo o mundo, reconhecendo-se a sua importância, tanto ao nível da assistência e serviços que prestam, como pelo seu impacto na economia dos países e global.
A gestão deste setor tem vindo a sofrer francas alterações ao longo dos últimos anos. Se já lá ia o tempo em que bastava o bom senso e a convicção do desejo de bem-fazer, hoje gerir entidades de economia social reveste-se de amplos desafios na resposta às necessidades sentidas. Do diálogo intersectorial à captação de investimento, da gestão de recursos humanos à satisfação de trabalhadores e beneficiários, da resiliência a novos modelos de gestão, caminhos que os líderes e colaboradores destas entidades terão de percorrer com ânimo e determinação. This trend matters because urban areas are the prime drivers of economic growth: industrial and commercial activities in urban centers account for 50%-80% of GDP in most countries. Inevitably, this rapid expansion is putting cities’ infrastructure, environment and social fabric under pressure (e.g., challenges like pollution, inequality, immigration, just to name a few).
Some cities are addressing these challenges proactively, improving the quality of life of the community. Conversely, other urban areas that were careless about the needs of a growing population see their urban infrastructures are collapsing. At the same time, rapid urbanization brings major implications for businesses as they refocus their offerings, marketing and distribution towards an increasingly urban customer base with distinct needs and consumption habits. In this session we will address the following questions: 1. How are cities embracing global challenges? 2. Why are some cities considered “smart”? 3. What is smart governance and why is it important? 4. What are the business opportunities in the process of reinventing cities? He is also an alumnus from IESE where he completed a PDG program. He began teaching part time in the MBA and Global Executive programs in 1999 and joined the faculty on a full time basis in 2003. Professor Rosenberg lectures in IESE’s MBA and Executive Education programs, where he teaches strategy, geo-politics, and sustainability and publishes a weekly blog on these topics under the title Doing Business on the Earth. His first book, titled Strategy and Sustainability (Palgrave Macmillan, 2015), is an exploration of the link between business and the environment and looks at the issue more from the perspective of business executives rather than that of environmentalists. The second book is titled Strategy and Geopolitics (Emerald, 2017) and is written to encourage business leaders to pay more attention to what is happening around the planet. Both books offer his own frameworks for looking at these two issues. Prior to join IESE Business School, Rosenberg was the Automotive Practice Leader of Heidrick & Struggles and prior to that he spent 15 years as a Management consultant in Europe, North America and Asia for A.T. Kearney and for Arthur D. Little, primarily in the automotive sector. Este é o clamor unânime de políticos, jornalistas, activistas e muitos mais.
A tecnologia e a economia, dizem eles, colocaram-nos numa situação insustentável: a) O planeta está em risco de desaparecer; b) De França ao Chile aos Estados Unidos, as situações de tensão social multiplicam-se, em grande parte devido aos crescentes níveis de desigualdade; c) O emprego estável é cada vez mais uma coisa do passado.
A lista dos problemas do capitalismo não fica por aqui. Por todos estes motivos, dizem, temos de nos ver livres deste sistema que não funciona bem e, também, dos tecnocratas que o criaram.
Os economistas não estiveram sempre à frente da política económica. No entanto, a sua influência cresceu consideravelmente nas décadas mais recentes. Nesse sentido, o problema não é só a economia de mercado mas também a Economia como disciplina. Uns dizem que a Economia é o melhor que há, outros que os economistas são o pior que existe.
Este livro tenta mostrar que ambas as perspectivas têm um fundo de verdade. Concretamente, o objectivo é nada menos do que corrigir a forma como a Economia é ensinada, respondendo às críticas dos críticos mas mantendo o que há de bom na disciplina. O lema do livro poderia ser: "A tecnologia e a economia meteram-nos num grande buraco, mas somente a tecnologia e a economia nos podem tirar desse buraco"
