Afonso Barbosa holds a degree in Economics and a postgraduate degree in Financial Analysis from the Superior Institute of Economics and Management, Executive MBA from AESE/IESE. He also carried out an Advanced Program in Financial Instruments Derived from the Capital Market Institute / BVL.
He has been Professor at AESE since 2011 on Financial Accounting, Cost Accounting, Planning Systems and Management Control. He teaches in various programs for executives, seminars and specific programs for companies in Lisbon and Oporto. He also has several years of experience in training in the capital markets area.
He is a managing partner of a company dedicated to consulting services in the area of ​​real estate brokerage, as well as in the areas of financial consulting and related services. He is also an independent consultant for the development of management systems, financial analysis of projects, budgeting and management control.
He has more than 24 years of experience in the financial asset management industry, where he worked as a fund manager and investment portfolio, investments in analysis and investments in equity and bond markets and director of investments in securities and structured products.

Co-founder of Edisoft - Company of services and software development, where she developed, for about 20 years, various functions in the areas of Business and People Management.
At AESE, she coordinates initiatives and studies in the areas of People Management, Talent, Future of Work, Family-Work Balance, Family Business, Leadership and Business Ethics. She is the author of several articles and case studies and co-author of several books, including "Free Markets with Sustainability and Solidarity: Facing the Challenge", "What you should know about ethics", "Hope and Reinvention" and, more recently, "The Future of Work" .
She is married and the mother of three children.

He was a Teaching Assistant at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (1971-74) and Visiting Professor at IST, Instituto Superior Técnico (1974-75). At AESE – Escola Superior de Gestão e Negócios, he has been a professor since 1984 and President of the Operations Department (1985-2010). Since 2024, he is Professor Emeritus. He also taught at IESE in Madrid and other B Schools.
At AESE, since its foundation in 1980, he promoted the school and served as a member. He was Professor of Operations, Technology and Innovation and, after 12 years as Director (2002-2014), he was appointed President of AESE Business School, until 2023. He is currently President Emeritus of the School.
Among other specific projects, he launched health and agribusiness programs at AESE, the Business Initiative Chair at the beginning of NAVES SCR – a venture capital company focused on Alumni ventures. He developed a national project to increase the competitiveness of the wine business ecosystem with research work, case studies and events.
It was the inspiration behind the AESE Programs in Angola and the launch of the EFMD on business school development in Africa.
He is the author of several case studies in Operations, Environment and Innovation, published by AESE and used by several business schools.
He is a member of the Board of several companies and foundations.

He has been Director of HBE – Hospital Business Enhancement since 2020, and a coach in AESE’s Management Coaching Team since 2012. He is a member of AESE’s Management (2003 to 2010; 2017 till now). He has been an Associate Partner of DPM Consulting Portugal since 2017. He is Member of the Research Committee of the Fundación DPMC (2021).
He won Best Paper Award at the 4th International Conference on Organization and Management (ICOM 2019), organized by the College of Business at the University of Abu Dhabi, entitled “Applying Business Interactive Games for Capacity Building: A Case Study in Health Care Operations Management”, in co-authorship with Prof. Nuno Biga from AESE Business School.
He is co-author of the book “Dreaming about an optimistic hospital”, a guide to revitalizing the humanization of care in healthcare institutions (Edições AESE, 2018). He contributed with an article by to the book “Reflections on Medical Ethics”, which includes articles by 20 other health specialists (Principia, 2019). He wrote the chapter “Managing people with ethics and compassion” in the book “Emerging Human and Techno-Human Business Management Dynamics in a Globalized Environment” (Nova Science Publishers, 2020). He is co-author of an article “Being ‘on a Mission’ at Work: How to Make Mission Statements Effective in the Healthcare Sector”, in the book “Regionalized Management of Medicine” (Springer, 2022).
He participated in the study “Business culture: empirical study in Spanish and Portuguese companies”, by IESE (2007), in the study “Impact of working hours on sleep and mental health” (2017) and "Attrition and talent retention" (2024).
He is the author of the case “Nelson Pereira” (2011) and co-author of the cases “Matilde” (2013), “Guilherme” (2014) and “Rodolfo” (2017). He directed the writing of the Case of the “Center for Cardio Thoracic Surgery of Coimbra” (2006), “The Operations Department of Millennium BCP (2012)” and “SAFE4PRO, an Unsafe Business” (2017).

He worked at the Soares da Costa Project Office and Quaternaire Portugal before living two years in Kinshasa (DR Congo), where he managed development cooperation projects.
In 1999, when he returned to Portugal, he was hired to manage urban requalification projects at Porto 2001 - European Capital of Culture. He was a Guest Assistant at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto.

He received his doctorate from Instituto Empresa y Humanismo (Univ. de Navarra), with a thesis on Interpersonal Communication, for which the Faculty awarded the outstanding prize for that year. Attended the PDE at AESE.
He dedicated himself to teaching in 1986. He was Director of PDE - General Management Program, at Oporto, for 15 years. He has taught at AESE since 2001, where he teaches in the areas of Human Behavior, Interpersonal Communication, Leadership, Motivation and Negotiation.
He is currently Executive Administrator of a group of Schools.
