Rear Admiral António Gameiro Marques entered the Naval Academy in 1976 and completed his degree in Naval Military Sciences in 1981, completing his Master’s degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, USA, in 1987.


After attending the NATO Defense College in Rome between 2004 and 2007, he served as Military Adviser to the Portuguese Ambassador to NATO. Promoted to Rear Admiral in November 2008, as a Flag Officer, he was CIO of the Portuguese Navy (2010 to 2013) and Deputy Secretary-General of the Portuguese Ministry of Defense (2013 to 2016). From September 1, 2016 to May 31, 2025, he was Director-General of the National Security Authority, which includes the National Cybersecurity Center in its structure.


During the 2013/2014 academic year, he completed the Senior Management Program at AESE/IESE Business School and, in October/November 2023, the 10th Non-Executive Management Program at the Portuguese Institute of Corporate Governance. In 2022, he won the IDC Best Digital Leader Award in Portugal. He currently teaches in senior management programs on topics ranging from leadership to the digital maturity of organizations, including cybersecurity, particularly the role that digital literacy plays in preserving democracy in today’s societies.
