This is quite known.
What is perhaps less understood, rarely discussed and perhaps not even fully recognized is the relationship between increasing complexity or uncertainty and the tendency to refer to he importance of business model innovation. Leaders and senior executives across industries, in fact, increasingly claim that “business model innovation is a priority”. Why? What does this claim mean, in essence? How can we think about it in practice and pragmatically?
Answering these questions requires to appreciate that there are distinct ways to think about business model innovation. They are related but not the same. What possible ways of thinking about business models we have?
It also requires understanding that, from a decision-making standpoint, there are distinct classes of challenges that managers in companies are confronted with. Each implies a different relationship between cause and effect and, in turn, requires different leadership styles. Interestingly, business model innovation happens to fall outside more normal challenges for which companies are generally better organized. What types of challenges we can think of, and which one resemble the innovation of business models?
Building on these premises, this talk aims at illustrating a pragmatic way of thinking about innovation of business models and offer an answer to the related questions. M.Sc. (Eng.), Ph.D. Business School Aalborg University Aalborg University (AAU) Lorenzo Massa researches, teaches, consults, and speaks in the fields of strategy, innovation, design and sustainability. He is Managing Director of the Business Design Lab and Full Professor at Business School Aalborg University. Lorenzo is also member of the World Economic Forum’s expert network for Innovation and adjunct faculty for executive education at École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL), the International Academy of Sport Science and Technology (AISTS), Frankfurt School of Finance and Management as well as Bologna Business School (BBS). His research lies at the intersection of Strategy, Innovation and Sustainability and has been published on outlets such as the Academy of Management Annals, the Journal of Management and the Oxford Handbook of Innovation Management, and the Oxford Encyclopedia of Business and Management among others. He holds graduate degrees with distinctions in Mechanical Engineering from the Dublin Institute of Technology (B.Eng.) and the University of Genoa (M.Sc. Eng.) and an MRM and Ph.D. in Management from IESE Business School. Esperam que as empresas ganhem um papel cada mais relevante em temas aparentemente políticos, como mudanças climáticas, a saúde mental ou o dever de giving back.
Esperam que os líderes sejam eficazes, autênticos e tenham compaixão. Mas para tudo isto ser possível, o sistema de valores pessoais e empresariais tem de estar alinhado moralmente, e o papel do gestor com o líder, ser um só.
Fazer política com propósito de comunidade, é provavelmente, o próximo passo da liderança que precisamos – consciente e generosa com o outro, antes de si próprio. Embora muitas organizações ainda estejam na fase de negação sobre como a Indústria 4.0, pode impactar os seus negócios ou a enfrentar dificuldades em encontrar o talento ou conhecimento para saber como aplicar o conceito nos seus casos de uso, muitas outras estão a implementar mudanças hoje.
Nesta sessão serão clarificados os conceitos abrangidos pela Indústria 4.0 e apresentados alguns casos de empresas portuguesas que implementaram, ou estão em fase de implementação, processos de transformação digital, com consequências profundas nos seus modelos de negócio. De 1998 a 2003 geriu e participou em projetos envolvendo diversos setores de atividade, dos quais se destaca os Bens de Consumo, alimentar e não alimentar, Serviços e Indústria, nomeadamente metalomecânica, engenharia, produtos elétricos e eletrónicos, ambiente, produtos químicos, entre outros. As áreas de atuação principais foram strategy and operations, supply chain management, business transformation e enterprise performance management. Em 2003 ingressou nos CTT – Correios de Portugal, onde desempenhou funções de Diretor de Compras e Logística. Em 2008 assumiu funções como administrador executivo nas empresas Mailtec Comunicação (produção documental) e Mailtec Consultoria (tecnologias de informação). Em 2012 foi nomeado administrador executivo/COO nas empresas CTT Expresso e Tourline Express em Espanha, ambas do sector de transportes expresso e logística. Em 2015 ingressa no grupo Rangel, como Country Manager da unidade de negócios de transporte expresso nacional, onde permaneceu até 2019.

Há que ir além do compliance, pois se compliance assegura os mínimos, é a ética que aspira aos máximos.
António Valero e José Luís Lucas afirmam no seu livro – Política de Empresa – que a eleição do futuro não é um tema de otimização, mas de iniciativa. De igual forma, o bom governo não se restringe a compliance com enquadramentos legais ou códigos de boas práticas. O bom governo, tal como o comando dum navio, vive de iniciativa, e do exercer da arte da prudência.
O bom governo corporativo tem vindo a transformar os conselhos de administração um pouco por todo o mundo, e nesta sessão abordar-se-ão, não apenas as grandes etapas históricas do desenvolvimento dos conselhos de administração, como as principais tendências que os mesmos estão a sofrer na atualidade, com vista a um melhor desempenho: desde uma maior diversidade nos membros dos conselhos de administração até à maior participação de administradores “independentes”. Tem uma longa carreira na área de sistemas de informação que iniciou na IBM Portugal como Engenheiro de Sistemas e depois como Consultor. Posteriormente, ingressou na Direção de Sistemas de Informação da Jerónimo Martins, onde desempenhou diversas funções, incluindo Responsável de Integração de Sistemas, Diretor de Infraestrutura e Diretor de Inovação.

These degrees are the stamps on our professional passports that paved the way for the remaining two-thirds of our journey. This implies that the nature of our work, along with the skills and knowledge required to execute it, remains unchanged for a lifetime – which of course is no longer true. While our parents likely held one job for life, most of us have had several – and not just jobs but careers, too. Our children can expect to have many jobs and careers through their professional lives – perhaps even at the same time, with the maturing of the gig economy.
Clearly, the future of work will not be about college degrees; it will be about job skills. Now is our opportunity to steer those without college degrees toward successful careers and increase diversity amongst our workforce.
According to the World Economic Forum, more than 1 billion jobs, almost one-third of all jobs worldwide, are likely to be transformed by technology in the next decade. We are already seeing this happen. Think of the service staff at your favorite restaurant taking your order on a tablet that is connected to a central order-processing system back in the kitchen. The tablet must work without glitches to keep the restaurant running smoothly. Think of the apps you use to shop, track orders and simply stay informed. The store needs to keep them up and running at all hours, day after day, all year round. And because every one of these stores collects and maintains customer data that they study for trends – they need data analysts. They must also secure this data, which means they must therefore run cybersecurity operations.
In these and other similar situations, people are the organizing force making sure technology works the way we want it to. This means an unprecedented and rapid rise in new kinds of digital jobs. According to the Forum’s Jobs of Tomorrow report, there will be a rapid influx of roles at the forefront of the data and AI economy, as well as new roles in engineering, cloud computing and product development. These jobs need talent with relevant skills, and importantly these skills can be learnt even by those without college degrees.
The COVID-19 downturn gives us ample reason to act at scale, and act now. While the outbreak has been unsparing in its impact, we’ve seen a correlation between jobless rates and education level. For example, in the US, the decrease in employment from February to May ranged from 6% among workers with a bachelor’s degree or above to 21% among workers without a high school diploma (see figure below). Workers with a college degree or higher education are also much more likely to have the option to telework compared with high school graduates who did not go to college. Dean Heukamp's intellectual interests center on decision making under uncertainty. He has published work on this subject in several specialized journals such as Management Science, Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. Her teaching and research interests focus on the management of organizational change. Batia has examined organizations in various industries (e.g., banking, technology, telecommunications, healthcare) undergoing change associated with mergers, downsizing, and new technology, exploring how to maintain the productivity and commitment of employees. She also studies entrepreneurship, virtual and mobile work, online communities and the careers of top executives and directors. Her work has been published in numerous academic journals, as well as manager-oriented journals such as Harvard Business Review. She serves as a Deputy Editor of the journal Organization Science. Sharing isn’t new. Giving someone a ride, having a guest in your spare room, running errands for someone, participating in a supper club—these are not revolutionary concepts. What is new, in the “sharing economy,” is that you are not helping a friend for free; you are providing these services to a stranger for money.
Arun Sundararajan, an expert on the sharing economy, will talk about the transition to what he describes as “crowd-based capitalism”—a new way of organizing economic activity that may supplant the traditional corporate-centered model. As peer-to-peer commercial exchange blurs the lines between the personal and the professional, how will the economy, government regulation, what it means to have a job, and our social fabric be affected?
Drawing on extensive research and numerous real-world examples—including Airbnb, Lyft, Uber, Etsy, Handy, Upwork, France’s BlaBlaCar, China’s Didi Chuxing, and India’s Ola, Sundararajan will share the basics of crowd-based capitalism. In an intriguing mix of “gift” and “market” in its transactions, Arun is able to demystify emerging blockchain technologies, and clarifies the dizzying array of emerging on-demand platforms. He considers how this new paradigm changes economic growth and the future of work.
Will we live in a world of empowered entrepreneurs who enjoy professional flexibility and independence?
