Even before the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020, capitalism was stuck. It had no answers to a host of problems, including disease, inequality, the digital divide and, perhaps most blatantly, the environmental crisis.

Taking her inspiration from the ‘moonshot’ programmes which successfully coordinated public and private sectors on a massive scale, Mariana Mazzucato calls for the same level of boldness and experimentation to be applied to the biggest problems of our time.

Mission Economy looks at the grand challenges facing us in a radically new way, arguing that we must rethink the capacities and role of government within the economy and society, and above all recover a sense of public purpose.

To solve the massive crises facing us, we must be innovative — we must use collaborative, mission-oriented thinking while also bringing a stakeholder view of public private partnerships which means not only taking risks together but also sharing the rewards. We need to think bigger and mobilize our resources in a way that is as bold as inspirational as the moon landing—this time to the most ‘wicked’ social problems of our time.

We can only begin to find answers if we fundamentally restructure capitalism to make it inclusive, sustainable, and driven by innovation that tackles concrete problems. That means changing government tools and culture, creating new markers of corporate governance, and ensuring that corporations, society, and the government coalesce to share a common goal.

We did it to go to the moon. We can do it again to fix our problems and improve the lives of every one of us. We simply can no longer afford not to.

She is winner of international prizes including the 2020 John Von Neumann Award, the 2019 All European Academies Madame de Staël Prize for Cultural Values, and 2018 Leontief Prize for Advancing the Frontiers of Economic Thought. She was named as one of the ‘3 most important thinkers about innovation’ by The New Republic, one of the 50 most creative people in business in 2020 by Fast Company, and one of the 25 leaders shaping the future of capitalism by WIRED.

Her highly-acclaimed book The Entrepreneurial State: Debunking Public vs. Private Sector Myths (2013) investigates the critical role the state plays in driving growth—and her book The Value of Everything: Making and Taking in the Global Economy (2018) looks at how value creation needs to be rewarded over value extraction. Her latest book Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism was released in europe on the 28th of january and will be published in the US on the 25th of march.

She advises policymakers around the world on innovation-led inclusive and sustainable growth. Her current roles include being a Special Economic Advisor for the Italian Prime Minister (2020); Chair of the World Health Organization’s Economic Council on Health for All; and a member of the Scottish Government’s Council of Economic Advisors and the South African President’s Economic Advisory Council.

To add to the drama, the market entered into bear territory (a fall of 20% from its previous all-time high), by plunging 9.5% in a single day. In the month between Feb/19 and Mar/19, the market fell 29%. Many portfolios have been devastated.
What to do in such an environment? Should one sell stocks and find a shelter in bonds? Or sell stocks and find a shelter in gold? Or not sell at all? Or even load up on stocks? This session will discuss the impact of the coronavirus on financial markets, compare it to other volatile periods, discuss the outlook for stock and bond markets, and draw some lessons that will hopefully help investors navigate the current storm. Javier Estrada, Professor of Finance at IESE Business School, Spain.
He is also a partner and financial advisor at Sport Global Consulting Investments, an independent financial advisory company; and he is the sole advisor of the investment strategy of the Alpha Investments mutual fund. Prof. Estrada holds an M.S. in Finance and a Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Illinois at UrbanaChampaign (USA), and a B.A. in Economics from the National University of La Plata (Buenos Aires, Argentina). His areas of specialization are wealth management, portfolio management, investments, and law & economics.
Prof. Estrada held positions at both the Economics Department and the Finance Department at Carlos III University (Madrid, Spain). He is also a regular visiting professor at HANKEN (Helsinki, Finland), IPADE (Mexico City, Mexico), Torcuato Di Tella University (Buenos Aires, Argentina), and the University of Montevideo (Montevideo, Uruguay), and has lectured on diverse topics and audiences around the world. Prof. Estrada is the author of Finance in a Nutshell (FT Prentice Hall, 2005), originally written in English and subsequently translated into Spanish, Italian, and Chinese; a second edition of this book was published in 2011, is entitled The FT Guide to Understanding Finance, and was translated into Korean. He is also the author of The Essential Financial Toolkit – Everything You Always Wanted To Know About Finance But Were Afraid To Ask (Palgrave Macmillan, 2011).
Prof. Estrada has done extensive research on the areas of portfolio management, investment strategies, and risk; he has also done research on emerging markets and insider trading. His articles have been published in the Journal of Portfolio Management, the Journal of Investing, the Journal of Asset Management, and the Journal of Wealth Management, among other journals. His research has been discussed on the Wall Street Journal, the Financial Times, Forbes, Barron’s, Morningstar, and on several blogs. He was also the founding editor of the Emerging Markets Review and was editor of the journal between inception in 2000 and 2006.
Prof. Estrada is a member of the CFA Institute’s Speaker Retainer Program; teaches open-enrollment programs and several courses on Personal Finance and Wealth Management; and was a tennis instructor. Vota-se praticamente tudo o que remete para cargos públicos: da eleição dos congressistas, a um sem-fim de cargos estaduais (governador, senadores, tesoureiro, juízes para os tribunais Supremo e da Relação), bem como temas especificamente locais (financiamento dos bombeiros, curriculum de cadeiras no ensino primário e secundário, etc).
A 3 de novembro não se escolhe apenas entre Donald Trump e Joe Biden — muito longe disso. Nestas eleições, entre os 100 lugares no Senado há 35 que vão a jogo. Aqui, os republicanos têm todo o interesse em manter a atual maioria de 53-47 e os democratas têm toda a esperança de conseguir reverter o statu quo.
Entre casos positivos de covid, internamentos, campanhas denegridoras, insultos e um debate com mais de 93 interrupções ao todo (das quais 71 foram de Donald Trump e 22 de Joe Biden) a democracia e o futuro dos Estados Unidos, nacional e internacionalmente, estão a votos.
