Sitting in a chair on the porch, Joaquim Alves Bento found himself contemplating the surrounding landscape of the Montargil dam. Late afternoons at the Alentejo country house possessed a unique splendor during the autumn months. This scene of serenity contrasted with the thoughts that troubled him.
Autumn is also the harvest season, particularly in October, when harvests are drawing to a close and it becomes necessary to look toward the new agricultural year pragmatically. Planning is required for all operations, including defining the crops to be sown, the objectives to be achieved in livestock farming, and the forest products expected to be available for harvesting and sale.
All these decisions left this doctor by profession deep in thought. Joaquim Alves Bento, a native of Abrantes in central Portugal, has had a long career dedicated to obstetrics, and at 68 years old, he manages an estate inherited from his family over the years. Despite his passion for bringing life into the world, this family legacy also led him to become an agricultural entrepreneur. This activity was always carried out in parallel and required him to stay abreast of business matters—on one hand, the sale of agricultural or forest products, and on the other, the purchase of assets necessary for the farm, such as equipment and property.
He never had full responsibility for the agricultural business, as there was always a family member dedicated to it full-time who moved the enterprise forward.
