71% of respondents in an Accenture study from July 2018 said that cyberattacks “are a kind of black box; we do not know when or how they will affect our organisation”, and only 13% of companies consider future threats when setting the security budget.
A cybersecurity expert recently stated: “There are only 2 types of companies: those that have already been attacked and those that will be attacked.”
The context is not encouraging: the impact of unauthorised access to critical business information can be enormous; leaks often originate internally; the digital footprint is increasingly larger, both in professional and personal life; and reports of user data losses continue to emerge even in organisations with enormous IT budgets. Stories abound of individuals and organisations held hostage by ransomware attacks or systems compromised by a simple link or attachment in an email, bringing companies to a standstill for weeks, with all the resulting losses. Some companies are blocking USB ports on PCs, websites are going down, and digital identity theft is occurring.
